Class run-down - F*cking with Clusters

About Class run-down

Previous Entry Class run-down Jan. 23rd, 2015 @ 06:11 am Next Entry
Here's my semester on a 1-5 coolness scale:

  • Zen Bhuddism - Pitzer class. The homework is to stare at the floor for an hour a week, culminating in a paper describing what you saw. Prof smokes lots of weed. 4
  • Scientific Computing, take 2 - Hated it the first time through, but now we get to use FORTRAN! Also, project based and I've got someone neat and better at physics to collaborate with 3+
  • Big Algorithms - Ran class. Great stuff. The topics that he's picked to teach, except for matriods, don't seem all that interesting now, but I'm sure that will change as the semester goes on. 5
  • PLs - Stone seems to be trying a bit to hard. Maybe if he normally lectures without stuttering and repeating all his material it'll be a good class. No one I really know in it though, and only 2 other girls. 3
  • Games and Gambling - Exactly what it sounds like. The first lecture we learned to not play Roulette.. he said he'd go through Craps, Blackjack, Poker, and some neat non-casino games as well. (like, "surprisingly", Backgammon). Class will end with Gambling Theory, aka "How to use your knowledge and not get black-listed in casinos." 6
  • Clinic - Can suck a big fat nut. We finished our whole project last semester and she still told us to do work over break. 1
  • Research, Yoga, Karate, Archery - TBA

Even with clinic, it averages out pretty nicely, so hopefully this will be a fun semester.

Heh heh. I am "in" compilers. Stone is like:

long pause.

"Okay."

long pause.

"Okay."

long pause.

"All right. Are there any questions?"

I went to talk to him today, and he seems a lot more coherent one-to-one. Of course, he also knows me from before, so I'm not sure what relevance that has...

I wonder what the difference is... I don't recall him being like that when I took compilers (and work habits aside, I did attend class most of the time). If you don't understand things, visit him in his office, ask questions after class, or send him quizzical emails. Heck, visit him in his office anyway; his collection of cool books is staggering (though the stuff he has in his office is mostly non-fiction). Admittedly, YMMV (it's possible that not everyone thinks Raymond Smullyan is one of the coolest things since Martin Gardner). Has he firmed up his deadline policy any?

The first thing I thought when I saw his book collection was "wow, Andrew must love this guy". But yea, go visit him. I think part of his problem in class is that he has trouble talking to women he doesn't know, so maybe that'll fix it.

yeah, but I've taken PLs and I've talked to him in person several times. His classroom manner is just a little amusing, though. My workload is going to be astonishingly bad if I keep Compilers in my schedule, so I'm going to have to drop it.

The Zen prof is awesome. I really learned a lot in that class.

As far as I can tell, the goal of the class is to learn nothing.

I already know that I know nothing! I should challenge the course!

Nope. You know you know nothing, thus you know something =P

It's true. But if she thinks that way, it's pretty clear that she has learned nothing. Right?

Wiseguy :-)

You forget, though, that if she thinks at all she hasn't found her true Bhudda nature.
