Text clipping files keep all their data in the resource fork... Which probably is no longer present. :(
A ls -l yourfile.textclipping/rsrc should be non-zero for a working text clipping file. I suppose a get-info in the finder should also show a file size of > 0k also.
I had no idea about copying from text clippings – that is super useful! Thanks!

Has a spotlight plugin for textclippings at the bottom of the page. Somehow Apple did not do this. Not that it helps at all with you current problem.

::headdesk:: ... that makes a lot of sense. Thanks :-) I wonder if that also explains why about 1/10 of my iTunes songs say "file not found" until I specifically tell the program to look at that file in the iTunes folder. ::sigh::
